The Monkey Head Nebula or NGC 2174

Object Details

The Monkey Head Nebula is located in the constellation Orion and is mainly an emission nebula. However, there is also a smaller reflection nebula on the right side shining in blue. The emission nebula has the catalogue designation Sh2-252 or NGC 2174. There is quite a bit of confusion about the nomenclature of this nebula and the smaller associated star cluster. In my image, the entire nebula is designated NGC 2174 and the star cluster is called NGC 2175. This object can be observed from the northern hemisphere in winter. The nebula is about 6'400 light years away from our solar system.
