Object Details

The Aquila Rift is a large dark region that runs through the otherwise very bright core of the Milky Way. The rift is located in the constellation Aquile and hosts many dark nebulae. LDN 673 is one of them. The nebula also contains RNO 109 (RNO stands for Red nebulous object) and the Herbig-Haro object HH 32. RNO 109 is located left above the center of the image and HH 32 right above the center of the image. Herbig-Haro objects are bright patches of nebulostiy associated with newborn stars. HH 32 is about 1'000 light-years away. LDN 673 is about 600 light-years away from Earth. Thus, the dark nebula extends to a distance of about 7 light-years.
